總評 Commentary
The old fiend has been hauled through the sky on a rope, dropped into a pit and made to beg, and he now looks at the prize his brother has brought home and says four characters of pure dismissal. This one is no use. It is the first thing he has got right all chapter.
Bajie's reply is the best joke he has been given and it is entirely in character. He hears himself declared worthless and immediately tries to turn the verdict into a release policy: if the useless are freed, free me and go and get somebody good. He is not offended. He sees an opening.
It is also a small piece of self-knowledge. Bajie does not dispute the assessment for a moment, because he has heard it many times and largely agrees. What he objects to is the inconsistency of being called useless and kept anyway, which is a complaint many people will recognise from working life.
