逐句解 Line by line
快早安排送他去罷。」
快早安排送他去罢。」
Make ready quickly and send him on his way."
罷 keeps bà at the sentence close.
三魔笑道:「送送送。」
三魔笑道:「送送送。」
The third fiend laughed and said: "Send him, send him, send him."
送送送 — the character three times over with nothing between. The repetition, not the word, is what carries the meaning.
老魔道:「賢弟這話,卻又像尚氣的了。
老魔道:「贤弟这话,却又像尚气的了。
The old fiend said: "Worthy brother, that has the sound of a man taking offence."
尚氣 — to be still holding a grievance, to be in a temper about something.
你不送,我兩個送去罷。」
你不送,我两个送去罢。」
If you will not send him, we two will."
罷 again keeps bà.
Three characters, all the same, and the whole plot of the rest of the chapter is in them. The third fiend has been overruled by two frightened brothers, and rather than argue he simply agrees three times over, which is the sound of a man who has already thought of something better.
The eldest hears the tone and misreads it exactly. He thinks his brother is sulking. He is in fact being handed a plan, and his response is to offer to do the job himself so as not to impose on an offended colleague. The novel is very good at this — a character reads the surface of a remark correctly and its purpose not at all.
