總評 Commentary

Bajie's courage lasts exactly two lines. He asks what there is to fear, volunteers for the fight, and then, laughing, asks to borrow the rope. The laugh is the tell: he knows what he is doing, and he is trying to get the safety equipment issued without admitting he needs it.

Wukong's reply is five characters of pure indifference — go then, if you are going. He has spent the scene talking Bajie into this and now offers no encouragement whatever. That flatness is how the novel signals that a trap is being laid, and the person laying it is not the demon.
