Then the third fiend stepped close and said softly to the old one: "Elder brother, when he comes out, bite down hard, chew the monkey to pieces and swallow him. Then he will not be able to torment you."
將 reads jiāng here, the particle that shifts the object in front of the verb. 得 keeps dé, meaning able to, since 不得 negates a capacity rather than completing a verb.
The third demon is the dangerous one, and this is our first sight of how he works. He does not argue with the deal his brother has struck; he simply steps close and lowers his voice. Everything he contributes to this chapter arrives the same way, as a private word at the elder brother's ear, and it is always the suggestion that turns an agreement into an ambush.
His reasoning is sound as far as it goes. Wukong's whole advantage is that he is inside and cannot be reached; destroy him at the moment he passes through the teeth and the advantage is gone. What the plan does not allow for is that a monkey who has spent this long in an enemy's stomach has had ample time to think about the exit, which is precisely what the next passage reveals.
