總評 Commentary

Here the novel does something it has not done so far in this chapter: it lets the reader hear the demons alone. Every promise made to Wukong is now confirmed as a lie, and confirmed casually, as a matter already understood among them. The scene exists to remove any doubt the reader might have had about the sedan chair.

The reasoning offered is almost sympathetic. The elder brother's life was at stake, so they said whatever ended the crisis. Anyone would. It is the ordinary logic of a hostage negotiation, and the novel gives it to the monsters without irony, which makes them more interesting than the usual obstacle.

It also settles what kind of chapter this is. Wukong examined the promise and judged it honest; the reader now knows he was wrong. From here on the pilgrims are walking toward an ambush that only we can see, and that gap is what generates the suspense of everything that follows.
