總評 Commentary

Wukong's objection is not that he was tricked, which he expected, but that the fight was unfair, which offends him. Tens of thousands against one does not stand to reason: he is appealing to a principle of proper contest, and he is doing it while holding a rope tied to a man's heart. The novel lets the inconsistency sit there without comment.

It is worth noticing what he asks for. Not an apology, not surrender, but that they come with him to Tripitaka. Everything in this chapter routes back to the same objective, and Wukong never loses sight of it even while enjoying himself thoroughly. The pilgrimage is the point; the demon on the rope is transport.

The doubled command at the end is the same device used earlier for very well then and for I am not coming out. When this novel wants a character to sound like a person rather than a page, it repeats a short phrase. It is the closest the prose comes to recording a tone of voice.
