Good Great Sage: he set the iron cudgel going through its whole repertoire and fought his way out.

Then he caught sight of his own muckrake propped inside the second gate. He went forward, shoved the little demons aside, scooped it up and set about laying into them, and with Wukong fought out through three or four sets of gates, killing more of the small demons than anyone could count.

著 is again zhe, the rake leaning and staying leant. 撈過來 — to scoop or snatch something across.

總評 Commentary

Bajie's transformation is instant and it is entirely about the rake. A moment ago he could not run; now he is shoving demons out of the way and laying about him. Getting his weapon back has done more for his legs than the untying did.

The muckrake matters more than it looks. It is a nine-toothed farming implement, and the novel treats it as a proper divine weapon on a par with the cudgel — it was forged in Heaven, and Bajie fights well with it when he can be bothered. Propped inside the second gate, it is also evidence that the demons filed him away as provisions and did not think the tool worth guarding.

Three or four sets of gates, and the dead beyond counting. The novel does not give a number here, and the refusal is deliberate: it uses exact figures when it wants the reader to feel a fact, and vagueness when it wants the reader to feel a rout.
