The second fiend supported the old one out to the gate, and they called: "Sun Wukong! Come out if you are a man. Here is ground for fighting, and good fighting it will be."

總評 Commentary

One detail undercuts the whole challenge: the old demon has to be held upright by his brother to issue it. His teeth are broken, he has been dragged about by his own insides for a chapter and a half, and he is being walked to the gate like a man being helped out of a pub. The invitation to come out and fight is being delivered by someone who can barely stand.

The word for the ground they are offering is the ordinary one for a battlefield, a place rather than an occasion, and the choice is worth marking because earlier chapters read the same character differently. When it counts bouts — one round of good fighting — it takes another sound entirely. Here it is simply a field, and the demons want Wukong standing in the middle of it.
