dànzhǐshìzhèdòngkǒuzhǎihǎo使shǐjiāhuǒwǎngkuānchù。」 dànzhǐshìzhèdòngkǒuzhǎihǎo使shǐjiāhuǒwǎngkuānchù。」

Only this cave mouth of yours is cramped and awkward. There is no room to work a weapon. We must go somewhere open."

reads chù, a place. 家火 is the everyday word for gear or tackle, used here of weapons.

The third fiend heard him and at once mustered his monsters great and small. All told, front and rear, there were above thirty thousand goblins, every one of them gripping a keen weapon. They marched out of the cave and drew up in the Three Powers formation, waiting only for Wukong to leave the mouth, so that they might fall on him together.

reads zhe, the ending that marks an action held in progress — gripping, and going on gripping. 三才陣勢 names a battle order built on the triad of heaven, earth and man.

總評 Commentary

Wukong asks for open ground, and it sounds like the reasonable request of a fighter who wants room to swing. It is also the exact thing the third demon has been angling for since he opened his mouth. The goading was never about honour; it was about geography. Inside, Wukong is unreachable. Outside, he is one monkey in a field with thirty thousand armed goblins already forming up.

The Three Powers are heaven, earth and humanity, the triad that organises a great deal of Chinese thought, and a formation named for them claims to have every angle covered. Whether such a formation was ever a real battlefield arrangement matters less than what the name promises: total enclosure, no gap. It is the tactical equivalent of announcing that all exits are watched.

The timing is the giveaway. The muster happens instantly, thirty thousand strong, which means it was arranged before the conversation started. Wukong has been negotiating with someone who had already written the ending.
