逐句解 Line by line

那怪得脱手,磕头而去。
The creature got its head free, knocked it on the ground and went.
得 keeps dé — to get, to attain. 磕頭 is the full kneeling salute.
行者同八戒見唐僧,備言前事。
行者同八戒见唐僧,备言前事。
Wukong and Bajie went to Tripitaka and told him the whole of what had happened.
備言 — to set out in full.
八戒慚愧不勝,在坡前晾晒衣服,等候不題。
八戒惭愧不胜,在坡前晾晒衣服,等候不题。
Bajie was ashamed past bearing, and stayed at the front of the slope drying his clothes and waiting; and of that we say no more.
晾晒 — to hang out and sun. 不題 closes the thread in the storyteller's formula.
Bajie is left hanging his clothes out. He has been captured, soaked, robbed, rescued and made to fight his way out on numb feet, and the chapter's last image of him for some pages is a wet man on a hillside spreading his shirt to dry.
The word for his shame is a strong one — past bearing, more than he can carry — and it is the first time in the chapter he has shown any. What produced it was not the pond or the pickling or the loss of his savings, but having to tell the master what happened. The audience for a humiliation is what makes it one.
