Though they turned about a few times and let fly a few rounds of moves, these were mortals when all is said, and it cost them something: one round through and they were puffing and blowing, unable to keep it up.

解數 once more, its first character read xiè — the rounds of technique. is zhuó here, in 著力, to exert force, which is a fourth distinct job for the character in this chapter. And 喘氣噓噓, panting and wheezing, is the sound of it. 凡夫 is the Buddhist term for an ordinary unenlightened person, and the sentence lands on it: they are men.

總評 Commentary

The chapter refuses the easy ending. The boys have been remade, they can lift the weapons, and after one round they are out of breath.

That is the more interesting outcome. A story that wanted to be simple would have made them heroes; this one gives them the strength and lets them be tired, and the word it uses for what they remain is the ordinary Buddhist term for a person who has not woken up yet.
