Bajie said with a laugh, "Oh, brother has his kindnesses, and his good deeds too. It is only that he hands out benevolence on the outside and keeps a wicked heart inside.

Bajie has been waiting his turn, and he ruins the mood with one balanced sentence. 外施仁義 against 內包禍心 — dispensing benevolence outwardly, wrapping a malicious heart inwardly — is built as a matched pair so the insult lands with a click. 仁義 is the great Confucian virtue-word, benevolence and right conduct, which makes the accusation sharper: Bajie is not calling Wukong unkind, he is calling him a hypocrite, and reaching for the loftiest available vocabulary to do it.

但dàn與yǔ老lǎo豬zhū走zǒu,就jiù要yào作zuò踐jiàn人rén。」 但dàn与yǔ老lǎo猪zhū走zǒu,就jiù要yào作zuò践jiàn人rén。」

But let him travel with old Pig, and he must be trampling on someone."

老豬, old Pig, is what Bajie calls himself throughout the novel — the same self-important third person Wukong uses with 老孫, old Sun. 作踐 literally means to tread on and spoil, and it is still the ordinary Chinese for wasting or degrading something. The complaint is that Wukong is generous to the whole world and vicious to exactly one person.

行xíng者zhě道dào:「我wǒ在zài那nǎ裡lǐ作zuò踐jiàn你nǐ?」 行xíng者zhě道dào:「我wǒ在zài那nǎ里lǐ作zuò践jiàn你nǐ?」

Pilgrim said, "And where have I ever trampled on you?"

那 is nǎ here, the question word — where — not the pointing nà that means that or there. The two are written with the same character all through this novel and the reader has to judge from the sentence, which is why the question mark matters. Pilgrim's reply runs to seven characters and is entirely rhetorical; he knows perfectly well, and Bajie is about to tell him anyway.

總評 Commentary

The compliment has lasted about thirty seconds. Bajie's timing is impeccable, as it always is when there is a mood to spoil.

What makes the dig work is that it is not wrong. Wukong is genuinely magnanimous at scale and genuinely merciless to Bajie in particular, and the novel has spent the sixty-nine chapters since Bajie joined demonstrating both. The joke is that Bajie, the least reflective character in the book, has produced the single most accurate character sketch of his brother that anyone manages.

Pilgrim's one-line answer is a small masterpiece of bad faith. Asking where is not a denial.
