行者盤詰 Why Have You Come
行者道：「你不跟唐僧取經去，卻來這裡怎的？想是你衝撞了師父，師父也貶你回來了。有甚貶書，拿來我看。」八戒道：「不曾衝撞他，他也沒甚麼貶書，也不曾趕我。」行者道：「你不跟唐僧取经去，却来这里怎的？想是你冲撞了师父，师父也贬你回来了。有甚贬书，拿来我看。」八戒道：「不曾冲撞他，他也没甚么贬书，也不曾赶我。」
逐句解 Line by line
The Pilgrim said: "Instead of going with Tripitaka to fetch the scriptures, what brings you here?
行者 takes 行 as xíng. The first question goes straight at the one suspicious fact: Bajie should be several thousand miles west of here.
I suppose you crossed the master, and he has sent you packing too.
衝撞 is to offend, to cross somebody; 貶 is to demote, to banish. The whole wound is in the small word 也, "too" — he assumes Bajie has been thrown out as well, because being thrown out is what he now expects of Tripitaka.
If there's an expulsion-letter, bring it here and let me see."
貶書 is a letter of dismissal; 有甚貶書 takes 甚 as shén. He asks for the paperwork. Wukong is many things, but he is not naive.
Bajie said: "I never crossed him; there's no expulsion-letter, and he never drove me off."
甚麼 takes 甚 as shén. Three flat denials, and the real reason still not out.
The interrogation is sharp and immediately suspicious: Wukong's first guess is that Bajie has been expelled as he was, and he demands the letter of dismissal as proof. The exchange quietly shows how fresh his own banishment still is — the pointed "too" carries the wound — and establishes that this monkey will not be easily gulled. Bajie is going to have to work.
