Why Have You Come
行者道：「你不跟唐僧取經去，卻來這裡怎的？想是你衝撞了師父，師父也貶你回來了。有甚貶書，拿來我看。」八戒道：「不曾衝撞他，他也沒甚麼貶書，也不曾趕我。」行者道：「你不跟唐僧取经去，却来这里怎的？想是你冲撞了师父，师父也贬你回来了。有甚贬书，拿来我看。」八戒道：「不曾冲撞他，他也没甚么贬书，也不曾赶我。」
逐句解 Line by line
行者道：「你不跟唐僧取經去，卻來這裡怎的？
行者道：「你不跟唐僧取经去，却来这里怎的？
The Pilgrim said: "Instead of going with Tripitaka to fetch the scriptures, what brings you here?
行者 takes 行 as xíng. Wukong’s first question goes straight to the suspicious fact of Bajie’s presence.
想是你衝撞了師父，師父也貶你回來了。
想是你冲撞了师父，师父也贬你回来了。
I suppose you crossed the master, and he has sent you packing too.
衝撞 is "to offend, cross"; 貶, "to demote, banish." The "too" (也) marks Wukong’s own banishment, still raw.
有甚貶書，拿來我看。」
有甚贬书，拿来我看。」
If there’s an expulsion-letter, bring it here and let me see."
貶書 is a "letter of dismissal"; 有甚貶書 takes 甚 as shén. Wukong demands documentary proof, shrewd and unsentimental.
八戒道：「不曾衝撞他，他也沒甚麼貶書，也不曾趕我。」
八戒道：「不曾冲撞他，他也没甚么贬书，也不曾赶我。」
Bajie said: "I never crossed him; there’s no expulsion-letter, and he never drove me off."
甚麼 takes 甚 as shén. Bajie’s flat denials leave the real reason for his visit still to be prized out.
總評 Commentary
Wukong’s interrogation is sharp and instantly suspicious: his first guess is that Bajie, like himself, has been expelled, and he demands the letter of dismissal as proof. The exchange quietly reveals how fresh his own banishment still is — the pointed "too" carries a wound — and establishes that the monkey will not be easily gulled. Bajie must work to bring him round.
