At these words the Pilgrim leapt down from the cliff, took Bajie by the hand, and said: "Worthy brother, you've come a long way for my sake — come, play a while with me first."

攙住 is to take somebody by the arm; in 耍耍兒 the colloquial is er. He jumps down off the cliff and takes Bajie's hand. The flattery has worked, and Wukong is not going to admit it.

Bajie said: "Brother, this place is far off — I fear the master will be watching for us and we'll be late; I'll not stop to play."

耍子, to play, to dally, takes as the suffix zi; 盼望 is to watch and hope for. For once Bajie is the one trying to get on with the job.

The Pilgrim said: "Since you've come all this way, at least look at my mountain scenery — how do you find it?"

到此一場, "having come all this way" — where is cháng, counting an occasion or an episode rather than naming a place. Wukong is in no hurry whatever, and the host sets the pace.

The blockhead dared not refuse outright, and could only go along with him.

總評 Commentary

The power has shifted back to Wukong. Softened by the flattery and in no hurry at all, he insists on showing Bajie the mountain first — and Bajie, for all his anxiety about the errand, "dares not refuse outright" and has to trail along. The small comedy of a tour imposed by the host on an impatient guest re-establishes who is in charge here, and teasingly delays the resolution the plot is driving toward.
