Looking closely, Bajie saw that it was the Pilgrim, in a mountain hollow, gathering his host of goblins.

仔細, carefully, takes as ; 行者 takes as xíng. 山凹 is a hollow in the hills; 群妖 is the host of goblins — the narrator's word for Wukong's monkeys, which quietly reminds us whose side of the ledger they sit on.

He sat upon a slab of stone-cliff, and before him were some twelve hundred monkeys, drawn up in rank and file, crying out: "Ten thousand years, Great Sage, our Lord!"

And there he is, holding court. 分序排班, drawn up in ranks and files, takes as fēn; 口稱, crying out, takes as chēng. 大聖爺爺, "Great Sage, our Lord," is what his monkeys call him — the title being 齊天大聖, Great Sage Equal to Heaven, which he awarded himself long before the pilgrimage began and never gave back.

總評 Commentary

Bajie comes upon Wukong in the full restored majesty of his kingship — enthroned on a stone cliff, twelve hundred monkeys ranked in front of him in courtly order, hailing him as sovereign. The tableau is a deliberate contrast with the humbled pilgrim of recent chapters: expelled from the quest, Wukong has simply resumed the royal state he was born into. And the formality of the scene — the ranks, the files, the shouted "ten thousand years" — mirrors the human court the demon has usurped, setting monkey-king against monster.
