分明要瞞著你 Bajie Owns the Ruse

Hearing these words, Bajie knocked his head and confessed: "Brother, plainly I did mean to keep it from you and coax you into going — I never reckoned you would be so uncannily sharp.

聞得 (wén de), "having heard"; 分明 (fēnmíng), "clearly, plainly"; 瞞著 (mán zhe) is durative, "keeping [it] hidden"; 不期 (bù qī), "unexpectedly, little did I think."

饒ráo我wǒ打dǎ，放fàng我wǒ起qǐ來lái說shuō罷bà。」饶ráo我wǒ打dǎ，放fàng我wǒ起qǐ来lái说shuō罢bà。」

Spare me the beating, let me up, and I'll tell it all."

饒我打 (ráo wǒ dǎ), "let me off the flogging."

行xíng者zhě道dào：「也yě罷bà，起qǐ來lái說shuō。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「也yě罢bà，起qǐ来lái说shuō。」

Pilgrim said: "Very well — get up and speak."

也罷 (yěbà), "so be it, all right then."

眾zhòng猴hóu撒sā開kāi手shǒu。众zhòng猴hóu撒sā开kāi手shǒu。

The host of monkeys let go their hold.

撒開手 (sā kāi shǒu), "released their grip."

那nà獃dāi子zi跳tiào得de起qǐ來lái，兩liǎng邊biān亂luàn張zhāng。那nà呆dāi子zi跳tiào得de起qǐ来lái，两liǎng边biān乱luàn张zhāng。

The Blockhead sprang up and looked wildly to either side.

跳得起來 (tiào de qǐlái), "managed to jump up"; 亂張 (luàn zhāng), to peer about in confusion.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「你nǐ張zhāng甚shén麼me？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「你nǐ张zhāng甚shén么me？」

Pilgrim said: "What are you gawking at?"

張 (zhāng) here means to crane about and peer.

八bā戒jiè道dào：「看kàn看kàn那nà條tiáo路lù兒er空kōng闊kuò，好hǎo跑pǎo。」八bā戒jiè道dào：「看kàn看kàn那nà条tiáo路lù儿er空kōng阔kuò，好hǎo跑pǎo。」

Bajie said: "I'm seeing which stretch of road is broad and open — good for running."

那條路兒 (nà tiáo lù'r), "that stretch of road," deictic 那 with the retroflex suffix.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「你nǐ跑pǎo到dào那nǎ裡lǐ？行xíng者zhě道dào：「你nǐ跑pǎo到dào那nǎ里lǐ？

Pilgrim said: "And where would you run to?

那裡 (nǎlǐ) is interrogative here, "to where."

我wǒ就jiù讓ràng你nǐ先xiān走zǒu三sān日rì，老lǎo孫sūn自zì有yǒu本běn事shì趕gǎn轉zhuǎn你nǐ來lái。我wǒ就jiù让ràng你nǐ先xiān走zǒu三sān日rì，老lǎo孙sūn自zì有yǒu本běn事shì赶gǎn转zhuǎn你nǐ来lái。

Even were I to give you three days' head start, this old Sun has the craft to fetch you back.

趕轉 (gǎn zhuǎn), "to chase [him] down and turn [him] back" — a quiet boast of his cloud-somersault's speed.

快kuài早zǎo說shuō來lái，這zhè一yì惱nǎo發fā我wǒ的de性xìng子zi，斷duàn不bù饒ráo你nǐ。」快kuài早zǎo说shuō来lái，这zhè一yì恼nǎo发fā我wǒ的de性xìng子zi，断duàn不bù饶ráo你nǐ。」

Out with it, and quickly — if this stirs my temper up, I'll not spare you at all."

發性子 (fā xìngzi), "to let one's temper flare"; 斷不 (duàn bù), "absolutely not."

總評 Commentary

Bajie's confession is disarmingly complete — he admits outright that the whole errand was a ruse to "coax" Wukong back — and it turns the flattery of the previous scene inside out: what softened Wukong was not really the invocation of Guanyin but Bajie's shrewd reading of the Mind-Monkey's own restless attachment. The pig is craftier than his blockish epithet allows.

The comedy then caps itself with his eyeing of the escape route while pretending to survey the terrain, and Wukong's flat reply — three days' head start would make no difference — a reminder, lightly worn, of the somersault-cloud that can cross a hundred and eight thousand li at a bound. The quarrel settled, the way is clear for Bajie to tell what really befell the master, which the next passage takes up.
