Here is cháng, length, not the zhǎng of seniority — the same character that gave 長老, elder, a few passages back. The in 馱著 is the sustained zhe, and 私情 means an affair.

搥胸爆跳 — beating the breast and bursting upward. The reaction is far too large for the accusation, which is how the reader knows it has landed.


總評 Commentary

Pilgrim has now accused his brother of exactly what his brother accused him of thirty-one passages earlier, in almost the same words. That is not carelessness by the author; it is the shape of the whole quarrel.

Bajie's reaction is worth watching because it is the loudest thing he does in the chapter. He argued the demon's case, he pulled at her ropes, he called his brother a schemer — and the moment he is asked to put her on his back he explodes. He knows precisely what he is like, which is why he will not go near it.
