The Tang Monk went back into the wood and had Bajie untie the rope from her upper half and dig her lower half out of the ground with his rake.

is jiào, to have somebody do a thing, not the jiāo of teaching. The rake does the digging, which is the first practical detail anyone has offered about that strange half-buried posture.

The fiend shook out her shoes and settled her skirt, and followed the Tang Monk out of the pine wood in high spirits, and saw Pilgrim.

The in 跟著 is the sustained zhe: following, and going on following. 喜孜孜 is a doubled ending on a stem meaning glad, and the doubling makes it visible from outside — she is not merely pleased, she is showing pleased.

總評 Commentary

Five days tied to a tree with her legs in the earth, and she shakes out her shoes and straightens her skirt. The book gives no comment and needs none.

The detail about the rake is quietly awful. Somebody had to dig her out, and the somebody was Bajie, and nobody stopped to ask what kind of captor buries the lower half of a hostage. The party has now performed the excavation that completes her staging, and she walks out of the wood behind the man she intends to consume.
