Tripitaka was truly tender-hearted, and could not hold back his own tears, and with a catch in his voice he called, "Disciples."
哽咽 is the choke in the throat before crying, read gěng yè — a pair of syllables that only work together.

Bajie and Sha Monk were in the wood hunting for flowers and fruit when they suddenly heard how mournfully their master was calling, and the Idiot said, "Sha Monk, our master has found relations here."
Two lives of one character in a row. 聽得 takes dé, the lexical suffix on a verb of perception; 叫得悽愴 takes the unstressed de, hanging a description on the calling. 獃子, the Idiot, is what the narrator calls Bajie throughout — affectionately, and not inaccurately.
總評 Commentary
Tripitaka cries before he has done anything, which is characteristic, and the book does not mock him for it. Being genuinely tender-hearted is not presented as a flaw. It is presented as the specific lever a demon can pull.
Bajie's guess is the funniest line in the passage and it also tells you how his mind works. He hears his master weeping in the middle of nowhere and concludes that he must have run into family, because in Bajie's experience that is what people cry about. He is not being stupid. He is being domestic.
