本寺僧人软弱,不敢与他讲论,因此把这前边破房都舍与那些强人安歇,从新另化了些施主,盖得那一所寺院。
"The monks of this house are weak and do not dare argue it out with them, and so they have given up all these broken buildings at the front for the robbers to lodge in, and gone out and got new donors, and built that one monastery behind."
In 蓋得那一所寺院 the 得 is dé, attainment taking an object — managed to build. 化 is the same word used all chapter for begging food; here they are begging for a building fund.
So the arrangement is a policy. The monks looked at a problem they could not fight and solved it by conceding half their property and raising money for a new one behind. It is cowardly, practical, and it worked.
It is also a direct answer to the argument that has run through the whole chapter. Pilgrim's position is that you deal with a danger by hitting it. Tripitaka's is that you must never turn anyone away. These monks have done neither: they gave the robbers the front rooms and got on with it.
