Tripitaka strode out in front, Sha Monk shouldered the load, Bajie led the empty horse and brought the girl along, and Pilgrim carried the iron rod; and so the whole party went forward.

The 擔 is dàn, the load, and both instances of 著 are the sustained zhe — leading and going on leading, bringing and going on bringing. In 一行 the 行 stays xíng: a party travelling together, not a rank.

Before they had gone twenty or thirty lǐ, the light was failing, and they saw towers and terraces, halls and pavilions.

Twenty or thirty lǐ is eleven to seventeen kilometres, walked at the pace of somebody with bound feet, which is why the light has gone.

總評 Commentary

The marching order is given in full for the first time since the foot of the mountain, and every position has changed. The master is on foot at the front, the horse is empty, and Pilgrim is at the back with the rod.

Note who is with the girl. Bajie leads the horse and brings her along, which is the job he refused a few passages ago in a different form. He would not carry her on his back; he will walk beside her.
