sānzàngdào:「zhèngshìyazhèjiànshìquèkuīxiǎngchùzhì?」xíngzhěxiàodào:「bàoshàngláitóngzhezǒuba。」sānzàngdào:「zhèngshìyazhèjiànshìquèkuīxiǎngchùzhì?」xíngzhěxiàodào:「bàoshàngláitóngzhezǒuba。」


逐句解 Line by line

sānzàngdào:「zhèngshìyazhèjiànshìquèkuīxiǎngchùzhì?」 sānzàngdào:「zhèngshìyazhèjiànshìquèkuīxiǎngchùzhì?」

Tripitaka said, "Quite so. That is a thing you have thought of and I had not. What is to be done about it?"

He concedes at once and completely, and he concedes to the practical objection rather than to any of the moral ones. What moves him is a problem he can picture.

xíngzhěxiàodào:「bàoshàngláitóngzhezǒuba。」 xíngzhěxiàodào:「bàoshàngláitóngzhezǒuba。」

Pilgrim laughed and said, "Lift her up and let her ride the horse alongside you."

The in 騎著 is the sustained zhe, and the is the light ba that makes it a suggestion. The suggestion is outrageous and Pilgrim knows it.


總評 Commentary

Having lost every argument, Pilgrim switches to the tactic that will actually work: he starts proposing solutions his master cannot possibly accept.

The trap is well laid. A monk cannot share a saddle with a young woman, and saying so out loud requires Tripitaka to admit that her presence is a problem — which is the concession Pilgrim has been trying to extract for four passages.
