挪步艱難 Her Feet Are Small

Now you have brought her out, and what you are sitting on is a fast horse that goes like the wind, and we have no choice but to keep up with you — while that girl has small feet and moves with difficulty. How is she to keep pace?

Three 得 in one line and they do not agree. In 坐得 it is the unstressed de doing the work of a linking particle; in 只得 it is dé, attainment, after an adverb; and in 跟得上 it is de again, the middle of a can-she-or-cannot-she construction. Her small feet mean bound feet, which is a flat statement of what that did to a woman's ability to walk.

The moment we leave her behind, if she runs into wolves and tigers and is swallowed at a gulp — is that not doing harm to her life instead?"

The fourth 遇著 of the chapter, again with 著 as zháo. He has come back round to the wolves and tigers his master invoked when he first heard the voice.

總評 Commentary

The practical objection is unanswerable and nobody has raised it until now. A party on horseback cannot travel with a woman who cannot walk, and the road ahead is the mountain country the chapter has spent four rhapsodies describing.

The wolves and tigers are the neatest touch. Tripitaka guessed at wolves and tigers when he first heard the crying, and used them as a reason to go and look. Pilgrim now hands them back as a reason to have left her where she was.
