逐句解 Line by line

madào:「yeya madào:「yeya

The lama said, "Good heavens, sir!

Seven characters of pure exclamation, and the doubled 爺爺 takes an unstressed second syllable, like the other doubled terms of address in the book.

zhèmenhǎojùnshīzěnmexúnzhèbānchǒu?」 zhèmenhǎojùnshīzěnmexúnzhèbānchǒu?」

Such a fine handsome master — how did you come to look out disciples as ugly as these?"

is xún, to seek out. He is genuinely baffled that a man with an arhat's face went shopping and came back with these three.

總評 Commentary

The lama's question is a joke and it is also the chapter's question, asked from the outside. Why would somebody who looks like that keep company that looks like this?

Everyone in chapter 80 has been reasoning from faces. The demon knew it and dressed for it. The joke is that the lama, laughing at the mismatch, has just described the one arrangement in the whole party that is exactly what it appears to be.
