眾神歸去 The Gods Depart
Line by line
That king burned incense up in the hall, and the assembled nobles bowed in worship before the steps.
那國王: 那 = nà. 眾公卿 "the assembled lords." 禮拜 "to do reverence" -- and note who is bowing to whom now.
The king said, “We are obliged for your honoured presence in descending here; pray return.
有勞貴體 "we have troubled your honoured persons," the formula for thanking someone who has put themselves out. 降臨: 降 = jiàng, to come down.
On another day We shall offer a thanksgiving rite.”
寡人 "the solitary one," the ruler's word for himself. 醮謝 (jiào xiè) "to give thanks with a 醮 offering-rite" -- the same kind of ceremony the Daoists were boasting about at the start of the chapter, now promised to gods who actually turned up.
Pilgrim said, “You assembled gods may each return; this king will offer a thanksgiving rite on another day.”
行者: 行 = xíng. 列位眾神 "you gods, one and all." 各自歸去 "each of you go home." The king asks; Wukong dismisses. Everyone present can see which of the two the gods are waiting on.
Those Dragon Kings went straight back to the sea, and the assembled gods each returned to Heaven.
那龍王: 那 = nà. 徑自歸海 "went straight back to the sea." 各各回天 "each returned to Heaven."
This is precisely:
這正是 -- the tag that introduces the couplet closing the episode.
Vast and boundless, the true and wondrous Dharma; utterly real, it realizes the nature and cleaves the heterodox gate.
廣大無邊真妙法 "the boundless, truly wondrous Dharma." 至真了性: 了 = liǎo here, to bring to completion -- realising one's 性, one's true nature. That is the same character that has been the light le all chapter, and the same 了 that meant "settle the account" in Bajie's joke about the kindling. 劈傍門: 傍 = páng, "cleaves the side door apart" -- picking up the word Wukong used a few passages back when he dismissed both sides' magic as side-door tricks.
The machinery of heaven is dismissed with full ceremony: incense burned in the hall, the nobles bowing at the steps, a thanksgiving rite promised for another day. The king asks the gods politely to go; Wukong tells them they may.
Then the chapter seals itself with a couplet, and the couplet names what the rain contest was about. The true Dharma is boundless; it realises the nature and splits the 傍門 apart. That last word is the one Wukong used himself when he called both sides' arts side-door tricks -- so the closing lines are answering him, and raising the stakes from a magic contest to a question about which road is the real one.
It is worth noticing how little the couplet says about who won. The victory was never really the point of the episode; the false road being cut through is.
