道門爭功 The Daoists Claim the Credit

國guó王wáng教jiào回huí鑾luán，倒dào換huàn關guān文wén，打dǎ發fā唐táng僧sēng過guò去qù。正zhèng用yòng御yù寶bǎo時shí，又yòu被bèi那nà三sān個gè道dào士shì上shàng前qián阻zǔ住zhù道dào：「陛bì下xià，這zhè場cháng雨yǔ全quán非fēi和hé尚shàng之zhī功gōng，還hái是shì我wǒ道dào門mén之zhī力lì。」国guó王wáng教jiào回huí銮luán，倒dào换huàn关guān文wén，打dǎ发fā唐táng僧sēng过guò去qù。正zhèng用yòng御yù宝bǎo时shí，又yòu被bèi那nà三sān个gè道dào士shì上shàng前qián阻zǔ住zhù道dào：「陛bì下xià，这zhè场cháng雨yǔ全quán非fēi和hé尚shàng之zhī功gōng，还hái是shì我wǒ道dào门mén之zhī力lì。」

逐句解 Line by line

The king ordered the carriage turned back, the rescript re-stamped, and the Tang Monk sent on his way.

教回鑾: 教 = jiào, to order. 倒換關文: 倒 = dào. 打發 "to send off, to see out."

Just as he was applying the royal seal, he was again stopped by those three Daoists, who came forward and said, “Your Majesty, this rain was in no way the monk's doing — it was still the power of our Daoist gate.”

御寶 the imperial seal -- the actual object the pilgrims have come all this way for. 那三個道士: 那 = nà. 這場雨: 場 = cháng. 還是: 還 = hái, "after all, rather."

總評 Commentary

The timing is merciless. The seal is in the king's hand and moving toward the paper when the immortals step in.

And notice what they have given up on. They no longer deny that it rained; they cannot. So they dispute who made it rain, which is the one question that cannot be settled by looking out of the window. It is a genuinely shrewd retreat.

The chapter is not going to end on an argument, though. Wukong is about to propose a test that no rite can counterfeit and no rhetoric can talk around.
