逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim said, "You be the road-opening general and cut the way in front.
將 is jiàng here, a general — the rank, a noun. It is not the jiāng that shoves an object in front of its verb, which this chapter uses far more often. 開路將軍 is a title invented on the spot for a job that means walking first.
If the fiends do not come, well and good; and if they do, you fight them, knock them down, and the merit counts to you."
罷 is bà here, to have done — 便罷 is then let that be the end of it, and not the soft ba that ends a suggestion. 功果 is the merit again, offered as wages, exactly as on the crag.
The offer is the crag plan with a title on it. Walk in front, meet whatever is there, and Pilgrim will be behind you. The only new element is the word general.
And the payment is the same as before: merit. Pilgrim has now twice arranged for his brother to meet a fiend first, and has twice described it as an opportunity.
