逐句解 Line by line
Luckily the wind and fog have cleared now. Sit down a while, the rest of you, and let me go and find some tender grass to feed the horse first. After that I can go to that household and beg a meal."
罷 is ba, the soft particle that turns a proposal into a suggestion — not the bà that means to have done with a thing. He cites the clear weather as his good fortune, which is his brother's lie coming back round as evidence for his own.
The Tang Monk said with pleasure, "Good, good. What has made you so diligent today? Go quickly and come back quickly."
勤謹 is diligent and careful — the last word anyone has ever applied to Bajie, and his master says it with delight. The question is meant fondly and is the only sharp thing in the passage: what indeed has come over him.
Tripitaka is pleased. He has been lied to twice in twenty lines, by both disciples in turn, and what he takes from it is that Bajie is showing initiative about the horse.
His parting words are the ordinary thing anyone says. Go quickly and come back quickly. Bajie will come back, hours later, covered in his own slobber and unable to prove a word of what happened.
