Bajie's fighting spirit rose, and he went at the fiend; whereupon that monster shouted the order for his imps to surround Bajie all together, and of them we say no more.
長 is zhǎng here, to rise or grow — the seniority-and-growth reading, and the opposite of the cháng that measured his snout in the portrait. Same character, same passage, two jobs. 不題 is the storyteller dropping the thread mid-fight, which is how the novel switches scenes without ending anything.
Bajie is winning, and the answer to that is forty imps closing in at once. The fiend does not lose the duel; he declines to keep having it.
Then the narrator walks off and leaves him surrounded. The next thing the book does is cut back to Pilgrim, standing safely behind the master, laughing at nothing his brothers can see.
