Now Sun Wukong, having beaten off his imp below the grassy slope, hurried back to the roadside and found his master gone, with nothing left but the white horse and the baggage.

傍 is páng, at the side — the same roadside where the first imp dropped out of nowhere at the start of the ambush. 止存, there remained only, is a bleak little phrase, and what remains is an inventory: a horse and some bags.

總評 Commentary

He beat his opponent, which was never the question. The plan only ever needed him occupied.

The horse and the baggage are the same two items the patrol officers listed as recovered stolen goods at the top of the chapter. The chapter opens with the party found inside a chest and closes with the master gone and his belongings standing in the road.
