逐句解 Line by line
Now Pilgrim, standing behind the Tang Monk, suddenly let a cold laugh escape him.
失聲 is to let a sound out before you can stop it — the laugh gets away from him. 冷笑 is the cold laugh, the one with no warmth in it, and standing behind his master while he does it is the detail that matters.
Sha Monk said, "Brother, why the cold laugh?"
Sha Monk asks the question again, as he did about the barbers. He is the one who notices things and says so, and the novel gives him roughly one line a scene to do it in.
Pilgrim said, "Zhu Bajie really is a blockhead. He heard monks were being fed and let me fool him straight off.
He says it out loud, to a witness, while his brother is surrounded. 聽見 and 哄 in one breath: the hearing and the fooling, cause and method, admitted without a flicker.
The laugh comes out before he means it to, which is the only involuntary thing Pilgrim does in this chapter. Everything else has been arranged.
And he confesses immediately, because Sha Monk asked. There is no attempt to cover it — the deception was never meant to be secret from his brothers, only from the brother it was aimed at.
