呼的風響 A Third From Behind the Mountain

The two clashed and charged below the grassy slope, and just as they had locked together there came a rush of wind from behind the mountain and a third fiend sprang out and went straight for the Tang Monk.

The third petal, and the wind is back — 呼, the same sound word that opened the whole sequence on the mountain road. 得 after 聽 is dé, the full reading. 徑 is straight, without deviating.

Sha Monk saw it and cried out in alarm, "Master, first brother and second brother have both gone blurry-eyed and let a fiend through to take you.

眼都花了, the eyes all gone blurry, is the same diagnosis Pilgrim made of Bajie one passage ago, now applied to both of them by the third brother. In 放將來 the 將 is the bleached jiāng between verb and direction. Three explanations, three departures, one plan.

總評 Commentary

Sha Monk repeats the reasoning of the brother who repeated the reasoning of the brother before him. The plan works by handing each disciple a ready-made explanation for the last one.

The wind is the giveaway and nobody hears it. This is the third time in the chapter that a wind has announced a demon, and the party spent an entire scene establishing that winds mean nothing.
