逐句解 Line by line

That blockhead, pulled about until he lost his temper, showed his true shape there and then, whipped the muckrake from his belt, laid about him wildly and drove the little imps back.
現出原身 — showing the original body — undoes the disguise in four characters. 釘鈀 is the nine-toothed muckrake, and the character is read pá. 築 is properly to tamp earth down, which is exactly the motion: he is not slashing, he is pounding.
One segment, and everything the disguise was for is thrown away. He came here small and thin and humming, and what breaks the spell is being jostled once too often.
The verb is the detail worth keeping. He tamps them, the way you pack down earth with a beam. Bajie fights like a farm implement because that is what he is holding.
