愈長威風 He Heard His Brothers Voice

That blockhead, hearing it was Pilgrim's voice, took courage from the backing, and his fighting spirit rose the higher. One round of the rake and he was pounding forward again.

仗著勢 is to lean on somebody else's power — 著 is zhe, leaning and going on leaning. 得 after 聽 is dé, the full reading. Nothing has changed on the field except that he knows his brother is watching.

那nà妖yāo精jīng抵dǐ敵dí不bú住zhù，道dào：「這zhè和hé尚shàng先xiān前qián不bú濟jì，這zhè會huì子zi怎zěn麼me又yòu發fā起qǐ狠hěn來lái？」那nà妖yāo精jīng抵dǐ敌dí不bú住zhù，道dào：「这zhè和hé尚shàng先xiān前qián不bú济jì，这zhè会huì子zi怎zěn么me又yòu发fā起qǐ狠hěn来lái？」

The fiend could not hold him off. "This monk was no good a moment ago," he said. "How has he turned so fierce all of a sudden?"

The fiend asks the reader's question and gets no answer. 不濟 is no use, not up to it — a flat verdict he passed a minute earlier and now has to withdraw.

總評 Commentary

The rescue is a voice. No rod, no fight, no descent — Pilgrim shouts his own name from the air and Bajie's fighting spirit does the rest.

That is a real observation about the pair of them, and it is not flattering to either. Bajie fights better when watched; Pilgrim knows it and has been withholding the watching.
