逐句解 Line by line
He whipped out the rod, went up to meet him and shouted, "Where do you think you are going? Watch the rod."
那 is nǎ, where — the question word, not the nà that points. 喝 is hè, to shout. The two-character close, 看棒, is the shortest quote-ending fragment in the chapter and is set here as part of the line before it rather than on its own.
The fiend would not talk at all. He raised his pestle and came to meet him.
更不打話 — would not exchange a word — is the tell, and nobody catches it. Every genuine fiend in this book announces itself and demands a name; the earlier one demanded Bajie's at length. A copy that has been sent to occupy somebody has nothing to say.
The decoy will not speak, and that is the one visible flaw in the plan. Pilgrim, who notices everything, is too busy going at it to notice a silence.
It is also a nice piece of design by the imp. A copy that talked would give itself away in a sentence, so the copies do not talk.
