逐句解 Line by line

zhǎnglǎodào:「shìakōngcéng。」 zhǎnglǎodào:「shìakōngcéng。」

The elder said, "That is so. Wukong never left me."

The alibi is confirmed by the person it was built for. He is not lying; he saw what he was meant to see, and it looked exactly like his disciple.

dāizitiàozherǎngdào:「shīxiǎoyǒushēn。」 dāizitiàozherǎngdào:「shīxiǎoyǒushēn。」

That blockhead jumped up and shouted, "Master, you do not know — he has a stand-in!"

is zhe, jumping while he shouts. 替身 is a substitute body, a stand-in, and it is precisely and completely right. Bajie has worked out the whole method, including the part he never saw.

zhǎnglǎodào:「kōngduānyǒuguàime?」 zhǎnglǎodào:「kōngduānyǒuguàime?」

The elder said, "Wukong, was there really a fiend or not?"

is in 端的, really or truly — not the ordinary particle de this character carries almost everywhere else in the chapter. Tripitaka asks the one question that matters, plainly, and gives Pilgrim nowhere to go.

總評 Commentary

Bajie is right twice over and believed neither time. He named the trick, the motive and now the mechanism, and all he gets is his master agreeing with the other side.

Then Tripitaka asks the direct question, and it lands. Not who is lying, but the plain matter of fact: was there a fiend. That is the one thing nobody has been willing to say out loud since the crag.
