That blockhead went off chuckling to himself.
著 is zhe: laughing, and going on laughing as he walks. He thinks he has got away with something, which is the last comfortable moment he has in this chapter.
行者趕上扯住道:「兄弟,他那裡齋僧,只齋俊的,不齋醜的。」
行者赶上扯住道:「兄弟,他那里斋僧,只斋俊的,不斋丑的。」
Pilgrim caught him up and held him back. "Brother, where they feed monks over there, they only feed the handsome ones. They do not feed the ugly."
The last turn of the screw, and it is gratuitous. The plan already worked; this exists only to make Bajie change shape, which will make his capture more humiliating and his account of it less believable.
Pilgrim has to run after him to add this. The trick was complete and he went back for one more piece of it.
It is also the cruellest line in the chapter, and it is aimed at the thing Bajie is least able to argue with. He is ugly. He knows it. He will now spend magic on the problem.
