Pilgrim, frantic, pulled out his cudgel, shook himself and changed into the very shape he wore when he made havoc in heaven — three heads and six arms, six hands holding three cudgels — and in the wood he laid about him, clattering and cracking.
相 is xiàng, a form or aspect. 著 is the sustained zhe, the cudgels held. 辟 is bì, and the four characters it opens are pure noise — the sound of a stick hitting everything.
八戒見了道:「沙僧,師兄著了惱,尋不著師父,弄做個氣心風了。」
八戒见了道:「沙僧,师兄着了恼,寻不着师父,弄做个气心风了。」
Bajie saw it and said, "Sha Monk, our brother has got himself into a rage. He cannot manage to find our master and has worked himself into a fit of temper."
Two 著, both zháo, the band that marks a thing coming off: the rage arrived at, and the finding not achieved. Moving the second one off its base pulls the 不 in front of it down to bù.
總評 Commentary
Grief comes out as violence against scenery. He takes the three-headed, six-armed war shape he last used against the armies of heaven and uses it to hit a wood.
The noise the text gives it is four characters of pure clatter, and there is no dignity in it whatsoever. This is the most powerful creature in the novel having a tantrum in the undergrowth.
Bajie's diagnosis is unkind, accurate and rather tender. He has got himself into a state because he cannot find him. Coming from the brother he threatened to kill last night, it is nearly sympathy.
