Bajie Is Sent To Scout

He called, "Sha Monk, you and I will stay here, and set Bajie to go down first into the fold of the mountain and listen about — see which road is good to walk, whether there really is a cave dwelling, and then see where the door opens; make careful enquiry into it all, so that we may go together to look for our master and rescue him."
著 is zhuó, the sending band. 的 is dì in the old vernacular phrase for what exactly — the third of three in this chapter, and a wholly different word from the possessive de written with the same character. 那 is nǎ, where.
總評 Commentary
Fifty-six characters of orders, and they are properly professional: find the road, confirm the cave exists, locate the entrance, report back, then go in together.
It is the most disciplined thing Pilgrim does in the chapter, and it comes directly out of last night's failure. He went alone, he was drawn off, and his master was taken. This time everybody moves together.
Sending Bajie to scout is also, of course, sending the least reliable member of the company to do the most delicate job, and he says so himself in the next passage.
