在這寺裡 A Fiend Inside The Monastery
行者道：「既不計較，你卻為甚麼啼哭？」眾僧道：「老爺，不知是那山裡來的妖邪在這寺裡。行者道：「既不计较，你却为甚么啼哭？」众僧道：「老爷，不知是那山里来的妖邪在这寺里。
逐句解 Line by line
行者道：「既不計較，你卻為甚麼啼哭？」
行者道：「既不计较，你却为甚么啼哭？」
Pilgrim said, "If you are not reckoning it up, then what are you weeping for?"
為 is wèi here, for what reason, and 甚 is shén — the two together give the ordinary word for why.
眾僧道：「老爺，不知是那山裡來的妖邪在這寺裡。
众僧道：「老爷，不知是那山里来的妖邪在这寺里。
The monks said, "Your reverence, we do not know from which mountain the fiend has come that is here in this monastery."
那 is nǎ, which — they genuinely do not know its origin, so this is a real question word and not a pointing one.
At last. Pilgrim finally asks the right question, and the answer lands in nineteen characters.
The phrasing is precise about the limits of what they know. Not a fiend from the mountain, but a fiend from they-know-not-which mountain — they have worked out what is happening without ever having seen it.
For the reader this is not news. We have known since the first line of the chapter, and have watched her be given a straw bed behind the guardian kings. The monks are telling Pilgrim something we have been waiting eighty passages for him to notice.
