真身打噤 The Shudder on the Road

But when he came to beat the Pilgrim's, that Pilgrim, out on the road, gave a sudden shudder and said, "This is bad!"

打個寒噤 (dǎ gè hán jìn) "gave a cold shudder," 噤 (jìn)—the real body feels the blows struck at its decoy.

三sān藏zàng問wèn道dào：「怎zěn麼me說shuō？」三sān藏zàng问wèn道dào：「怎zěn么me说shuō？」

Sanzang asked, "How do you mean?"

怎麼說 (zěnme shuō) "how do you mean?"—the master pressing for the cause of the shudder.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「我wǒ將jiāng四sì顆kē柳liǔ樹shù變biàn作zuò我wǒ師shī徒tú四sì眾zhòng，我wǒ只zhǐ說shuō他tā昨zuó日rì打dǎ了le我wǒ兩liǎng頓dùn，今jīn日rì想xiǎng不bù打dǎ了le，卻què又yòu打dǎ我wǒ的de化huà身shēn，所suǒ以yǐ我wǒ真zhēn身shēn打dǎ噤jìn。行xíng者zhě道dào：「我wǒ将jiāng四sì颗kē柳liǔ树shù变biàn作zuò我wǒ师shī徒tú四sì众zhòng，我wǒ只zhǐ说shuō他tā昨zuó日rì打dǎ了le我wǒ两liǎng顿dùn，今jīn日rì想xiǎng不bù打dǎ了le，却què又yòu打dǎ我wǒ的de化huà身shēn，所suǒ以yǐ我wǒ真zhēn身shēn打dǎ噤jìn。

The Pilgrim said, "I changed four willows into us four, master and disciples. I reckoned that, having beaten me twice yesterday, he would think better of it today—but he is beating my substitute-body instead, and so my true body shudders.

將四顆柳樹變作我師徒四眾 (jiāng sì kē liǔ shù biàn zuò wǒ shītú sì zhòng) "changed four willows into our party of four," disposal 將 (jiāng). 化身 (huàshēn) "substitute-body." 打噤 (dǎ jìn) "to shudder."

收shōu了le法fǎ罷bà。」收shōu了le法fǎ罢bà。」

"Let me withdraw the spell."

收了法罷 (shōu le fǎ bà) "let me take back the magic"—to release the willows before the ruse is felt further.

那nà行xíng者zhě慌huāng忙máng念niàn咒zhòu收shōu法fǎ。那nà行xíng者zhě慌huāng忙máng念niàn咒zhòu收shōu法fǎ。

That Pilgrim hastily recited a spell and withdrew the magic.

念咒收法 (niàn zhòu shōu fǎ) "recited a spell and withdrew the enchantment"—the willows revert, exposing the trick to the abbey.

總評 Commentary

The trick has a cost Wukong did not foresee: through the sympathetic bond between a body and its blood-made double, the blows struck at his willow-self make his true body shudder on the road miles away. His hurried recall of the spell both spares himself further phantom pain and, in reverting the trees, springs the discovery on the Great Immortal—driving the plot toward the second pursuit and the chapter's climactic confrontation.
