對頭又來 The Adversary Returns

That Great Immortal gave the word to give chase, sprang up on a cloud-head, and looking away west saw that monk plodding along, whip in hand and horse before him, going on his way.

挑包策馬 (tiāo bāo cè mǎ) "shouldering the pack and driving the horse." 正然走路 (zhèng rán zǒu lù) "just then going along the road."

大dà仙xiān低dī落luò雲yún頭tóu，叫jiào聲shēng：「孫sūn行xíng者zhě，往wǎng那nǎ裡lǐ走zǒu？大dà仙xiān低dī落luò云yún头tóu，叫jiào声shēng：「孙sūn行xíng者zhě，往wǎng那nǎ里lǐ走zǒu？

The Great Immortal brought his cloud down low and called out, "Sun the Pilgrim, where are you off to?

往那裡走 (wǎng nǎlǐ zǒu) "where are you off to?", interrogative 那 (nǎ) (= 哪).

還huán我wǒ人rén參shēn樹shù來lái。」还huán我wǒ人rén参shēn树shù来lái。」

"Give me back my ginseng tree!"

還我人參樹來 (huán wǒ rénshēn shù lái) "return my ginseng tree," 還 (huán) "to give back" and 參 (shēn) in 人參.

八bā戒jiè聽tīng見jiàn道dào：「罷bà了le，對duì頭tóu又yòu來lái了le。」八bā戒jiè听tīng见jiàn道dào：「罢bà了le，对duì头tóu又yòu来lái了le。」

Bajie, hearing it, said, "It's all up—the enemy's come again."

對頭又來了 (duìtóu yòu lái le) "the adversary has come once more"—Bajie's dismay at the reappearance.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「師shī父fù，且qiě把bǎ善shàn字zì兒er包bāo起qǐ，讓ràng我wǒ們men使shǐ些xiē兇xiōng惡è，一yì發fā結jié果guǒ了le他tā，脫tuō身shēn去qù罷bà。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「师shī父fù，且qiě把bǎ善shàn字zì儿er包bāo起qǐ，让ràng我wǒ们men使shǐ些xiē凶xiōng恶è，一yì发fā结jié果guǒ了le他tā，脱tuō身shēn去qù罢bà。」

The Pilgrim said, "Master, just wrap up the word 'mercy' for now; let us use a little ferocity, finish him off at one stroke, and be off."

把善字兒包起 (bǎ shàn zì'r bāo qǐ) "wrap up the word 'goodness,'" i.e. set mercy aside; suffix 兒 (er). 一發結果了他 (yì fā jiéguǒ le tā) "finish him off at one go."

唐táng僧sēng聞wén言yán，戰zhàn戰zhàn兢jīng兢jīng，未wèi曾céng答dá應yìng。唐táng僧sēng闻wén言yán，战zhàn战zhàn兢jīng兢jīng，未wèi曾céng答dá应yìng。

The Tang Monk, hearing this, trembled and shook and gave no answer.

戰戰兢兢 (zhàn zhàn jīng jīng) "trembling and fearful." 未曾答應 (wèi céng dāyìng) "gave no answer," 應 (yìng) "to respond"—the timid master will not sanction violence.

總評 Commentary

Wukong's grim proposal—"wrap up the word 'mercy'" and finish the immortal off—shows the ruthless streak the pilgrimage will spend chapters tempering, and Sanzang's trembling silence is its foil: the master will not sanction killing even to save himself. Bajie's rueful "the enemy's come again" catches the pilgrims' exhaustion as the inescapable Great Immortal runs them down a second time.
