So he had twenty little immortals hoist it up and fling it into the cauldron—and with a boiling splash it rang out, spattering up drops of hot oil that raised great scalding blisters on the faces of the young Daoists.

扛將起來 (káng jiāng qǐlái) "hoist it up," particle 將 (jiāng). 一摜 (yí guàn) "flung," 摜 (guàn). 燎漿大泡 (liáo jiāng dà pào) "great scalding blisters," 燎 (liáo), 漿 (jiāng).

Then the fire-tending lad was heard to cry, "The pot's leaking! The pot's leaking!"

燒火的小童 (shāo huǒ de xiǎo tóng) "the fire-tending boy." 鍋漏了 (guō lòu le) "the pot is leaking"—the oil pouring out through the cracked base.

Before the words were out, the oil had all leaked away to the last drop, the cauldron-bottom was broken through—and it turned out a stone lion had been put inside.

漏得罄盡 (lòu de qìng jìn) "leaked away utterly," 罄盡 (qìng jìn) "wholly emptied." 石獅子 (shí shīzi) "a stone lion"—the substitution at last discovered.

總評 Commentary

The stratagem pays off in slapstick catastrophe: the stone lion, flung into the oil, splashes and scalds the Daoists, then cracks the cauldron's bottom so the oil drains away entirely. The discovery of "a stone lion inside" exposes Wukong's trick and enrages the Great Immortal—driving the chapter toward its final confrontation and its cliffhanger close.
