That Great Sage recited a spell, bit open the tip of his tongue, sprayed the blood on the trees, and cried, "Change!"

念動咒語 (niàn dòng zhòuyǔ) "recited a spell." 咬破舌尖 (yǎo pò shé jiān) "bit open the tongue-tip"—drawing the transforming blood. 將血噴在樹上 (jiāng xuè pēn zài shù shàng) "sprayed the blood on the trees," disposal 將 (jiāng).

One root became the elder, one became himself, and the other two became Wujing and Bajie; all took on identical features and matching forms—question them and they would speak, call their names and they would answer.

變作長老 (biàn zuò zhǎnglǎo) "became the elder," 長 (zhǎng). 都變得容貌一般 (dōu biàn de róngmào yìbān) "all changed to the same likeness," complement 得 (de). 相貌皆同 (xiàngmào jiē tóng) "features all alike," 相 (xiàng) "appearance." 答應 (dāyìng) "to answer," 應 (yìng) "to respond" (not 應 (yīng) "ought").

The two of them then set off at a stride and caught up with their master.

放開步 (fàng kāi bù) "set off at a stride." 趕上師父 (gǎn shàng shīfu) "caught up with the master"—the disciples rejoin the escaping party.

這zhè一yí夜yè依yī舊jiù馬mǎ不bù停tíng蹄tí，躲duǒ離lí了le五wǔ莊zhuāng觀guàn。这zhè一yí夜yè依yī旧jiù马mǎ不bù停tíng蹄tí，躲duǒ离lí了le五wǔ庄zhuāng观guàn。

That night, once more without the horse resting a hoof, they got clear away from the Five-Villages Abbey.

依舊馬不停蹄 (yījiù mǎ bù tíng tí) "again the horse never resting its hooves." 躲離了五莊觀 (duǒ lí le Wǔzhuāng Guàn) "slipped away from the Five-Villages Abbey," 觀 (guàn).

總評 Commentary

The blood-and-willow transformation is a signature marvel: Wukong's own blood, sprayed on the felled trees, gives them the pilgrims' shapes, voices, and names, so that they can stand the questioning and the whipping in the real party's stead. It is a doubling of the doubling from the sleeve-scene—decoys so perfect they answer to their names—and it buys the pilgrims a second escape into the night.
