潑猴劈打 The Monkey Strikes Out

The Pilgrim, hearing this—being one with a guilty something on his mind—answered hastily: "No, no—we came up by the road."

心中有物的人 (xīnzhōng yǒu wù de rén) "one with something on his conscience"—Wukong, knowing his guilt, is quick to deny. 打上路來 (dǎ shàng lù lái) "came up along the road."

那nà大dà仙xiān指zhǐ定dìng笑xiào道dào：「我wǒ把bǎ你nǐ這zhè個gè潑pō猴hóu！那nà大dà仙xiān指zhǐ定dìng笑xiào道dào：「我wǒ把bǎ你nǐ这zhè个gè泼pō猴hóu！

That Great Immortal pointed at him and laughed: "I have you now, you brazen monkey!

指定笑道 (zhǐdìng xiào dào) "pointed straight at him and laughed." 潑猴 (pō hóu) "brazen, unruly monkey"—a standing epithet for Wukong.

你nǐ瞞mán誰shuí哩lī？你nǐ瞒mán谁shuí哩lī？

"Whom do you think to fool?

你瞞誰哩 (nǐ mán shéi li) "whom are you deceiving?"—the disguise sees through the disguise, so to speak.

你nǐ倒dào在zài我wǒ觀guàn裡lǐ，把bǎ我wǒ人rén參shēn果guǒ樹shù打dǎ倒dǎo，你nǐ連lián夜yè走zǒu在zài此cǐ間jiān，還hái不bù招zhāo認rèn，遮zhē飾shì甚shén麼me？你nǐ倒dào在zài我wǒ观guàn里lǐ，把bǎ我wǒ人rén参shēn果guǒ树shù打dǎ倒dǎo，你nǐ连lián夜yè走zǒu在zài此cǐ间jiān，还hái不bù招zhāo认rèn，遮zhē饰shì甚shén么me？

"You, to top it off, went into my abbey and knocked down my ginseng-fruit tree, then fled by night to this spot; and still you will not own it—what are you covering up?

你倒在我觀裡 (nǐ dào zài wǒ guàn lǐ) "you, on the contrary, [went] into my abbey," 倒 (dào) "to top it off, instead," and 觀 (guàn) the abbey. 把我人參果樹打倒 (bǎ wǒ rénshēn guǒ shù dǎ dǎo) "knocked down my ginseng-fruit tree," 倒 (dǎo) "topple," 參 (shēn). 遮飾 (zhēshì) "to gloss over, cover up."

不bú要yào走zǒu，趁chèn早zǎo去qù還huán我wǒ樹shù來lái。」不bú要yào走zǒu，趁chèn早zǎo去qù还huán我wǒ树shù来lái。」

"Do not run off—make haste and give me back my tree."

趁早 (chènzǎo) "hurry, without delay." 還我樹來 (huán wǒ shù lái) "give me back my tree," 還 (huán) "to return, give back" (not the adverb 還 (hái)).

那nà行xíng者zhě聞wén言yán，心xīn中zhōng惱nǎo怒nù，掣chè鐵tiě棒bàng，不bù容róng分fēn說shuō，望wàng大dà仙xiān劈pī頭tóu就jiù打dǎ。那nà行xíng者zhě闻wén言yán，心xīn中zhōng恼nǎo怒nù，掣chè铁tiě棒bàng，不bù容róng分fēn说shuō，望wàng大dà仙xiān劈pī头tóu就jiù打dǎ。

That Pilgrim, hearing it, was seized with fury; he drew out the iron cudgel and, allowing no words of explanation, struck straight at the Great Immortal's head.

掣鐵棒 (chè tiě bàng) "drew the iron cudgel," 掣 (chè). 不容分說 (bù róng fēn shuō) "brooking no explanation." 劈頭就打 (pī tóu jiù dǎ) "struck straight at [his] head."

大dà仙xiān側cè身shēn躲duǒ過guò，踏tà祥xiáng光guāng，徑jìng到dào空kōng中zhōng。大dà仙xiān侧cè身shēn躲duǒ过guò，踏tà祥xiáng光guāng，径jìng到dào空kōng中zhōng。

The Great Immortal dodged aside, trod the auspicious light, and made straight up into the empty air.

側身躲過 (cè shēn duǒ guò) "turned aside and dodged," 躲 (duǒ). 踏祥光 (tà xiáng guāng) "trod the auspicious light," rising on cloud.

行xíng者zhě也yě騰téng雲yún，急jí趕gǎn上shàng去qù。行xíng者zhě也yě腾téng云yún，急jí赶gǎn上shàng去qù。

The Pilgrim too mounted the clouds and hurried up after him.

騰雲 (téng yún) "to mount the clouds." 急趕上去 (jí gǎn shàngqù) "hastened up in pursuit."

總評 Commentary

Wukong's guilty reflex—hastily denying they passed the mountain—only confirms his guilt to the Great Immortal, who drops the disguise's pretence and names the theft outright. The monkey's answer is characteristic: rather than argue, he swings first, "allowing no words of explanation." The immortal's effortless dodge into the sky sets up the aerial duel and the display of his true form to come.
