拜墳痛哭 Weeping at a False Grave

The little fiend said, "I was just outside the back door, up at the head of the ravine, keeping a lookout, when all at once I heard people crying loudly.

The fiends have a lookout posted at the back door, which confirms Wukong's deduction from the other side. In 聽得, 得 is dé after a verb of hearing.

So I scrambled up to the top of the peak and looked, and it was Zhu Bajie, Sun the Pilgrim and Sha Monk over there bowing at a grave and weeping bitterly.

The character 𧿼 is a rare one and this chapter carries it three times, in three different senses — here it is scrambling up a height. It is uncommon enough that many fonts will not have it, and the reader may see a box. 拜墳 is to make the formal bows at a grave, which is a rite and not just grief.

總評 Commentary

The spy is telling the truth and the truth is a gift. The fiends now believe the pilgrims have accepted the death and are performing the funeral, which means the siege is over and the household can relax.

Everything the fiends conclude from this report is correct except the one thing that matters, and they have no way to check it. They cannot know that the head in the grave was one of their own stock, or that the monkey listening to the report is in the room.
