Sun the Pilgrim knew it for a real human head, and helpless, he wept.
In 認得, to know something for what it is, 得 is dé, the reading that follows a verb of perceiving. The bitter joke is that his test was sound and his conclusion is wrong: this is a real head, and it is not his master's. 沒奈何 is having nothing you can do about it.
Bajie and Sha Monk both raised their voices and wept along with him.
Eleven characters and the whole party is undone. 放聲, to let the voice go, is the standard phrase for crying out loud rather than quietly — the novel is careful to distinguish this from the tears Wukong could not stop earlier.
Bajie, holding back his tears, said, "Brother, do not weep just yet.
Bajie turns practical again, exactly as he did over the pep talk earlier. 噙著淚, holding tears in the eye without letting them fall, takes 著 as zhe for the holding kept up while he speaks. He is crying and organising at the same time.
The weather is not good weather, and I am afraid it will go bad in no time. Let me carry it off and get it underground while the vital breath is still in it, and then we can cry."
This is one of the most quietly devastating lines in the chapter, because it is entirely reasonable. 乘生氣 is to take advantage of the life-breath still present, the same vocabulary the description of the cave used a few passages ago. Bajie is applying burial custom, in the heat, to what he believes is his teacher.
Pilgrim said, "That is well said."
Seven characters of agreement from a man who cannot speak. 說得是 hangs the verdict off the speaking, and 得 is de in that hinge, not the attaining reading it took at the start of this passage.
Wukong's reasoning was correct at every step and it has led him wrong, because the one thing he could not test was whose head it is. He proved the first was wood. He cannot prove this one is a stranger.
Bajie is the competent one in this scene, and the novel does not make a fuss about it. He notices the heat, he knows the custom, he thinks about what will happen to the remains overnight. Grief makes Wukong useless and it makes Bajie methodical.
