Pilgrim said, "Brother, I am not blaming you.

Wukong backing down is rare enough to be worth marking. He does it here because he has already worked out that the fault is spread across all three of them, and because there is no time. The line is only nine characters long and it changes the temperature of the whole scene.

Somehow your eyes must have been swimming, and you let the fiend get back past you and take the master.

眼花, eyes-flowering, is what Chinese still says for vision going swimmy — a very ordinary, very physical excuse to offer a man who has just lost his teacher. Wukong is being generous and slightly patronising at the same time.

yāojīngjiàoshāshàngkànzheshīdejīnliánshāshàngjiànle。」 yāojīngjiàoshāshàngkànzheshīdejīnliánshāshàngjiànle。」

I went off to fight that fiend and left Sha Monk watching the master, and now Sha Monk has gone missing too."

And here the trick lands. Each of the three was pulled off in a different direction, each thinking somebody else had the master. 看著 takes as zhe once more, the third time in three passages that continuous watching is invoked and the third time it was not actually happening.

總評 Commentary

The scene is built like a farce and lands like a disaster. Three people take turns explaining that the master was somebody else's responsibility, and each of them is telling the truth.

The fiends' stratagem worked by exploiting the one weakness a party of bodyguards has: divided attention. Nobody was negligent. Everybody was busy. That is a much more uncomfortable kind of failure than simple carelessness, and the novel makes the reader sit in it for a full page before offering any relief.
