咬著牙罵 That Ape Has Killed Me
校尉道：「你懷中揣的是甚？」獃子卻才低頭看時，真個有一張字紙。展開一看，咬著牙罵道：「那猢猻害殺我也。」校尉道：「你怀中揣的是甚？」呆子却才低头看时，真个有一张字纸。展开一看，咬着牙骂道：「那猢狲害杀我也。」
逐句解 Line by line
校尉道：「你懷中揣的是甚？」
校尉道：「你怀中揣的是甚？」
The guardsmen said, "Then what is that stowed in your breast?"
甚 standing alone reads shèn. 揣 is chuāi again — the verb that has now stowed away a snout, a proclamation, and in this question a piece of evidence.
獃子卻才低頭看時，真個有一張字紙。
呆子却才低头看时，真个有一张字纸。
Only then did the Idiot lower his head and look, and there really was a sheet of written paper.
卻才 is everyday speech for 'only just now'. He has been arguing about the notice for four exchanges without once looking down.
展開一看，咬著牙罵道：「那猢猻害殺我也。」
展开一看，咬着牙骂道：「那猢狲害杀我也。」
He opened it out, took one look, and swore through gritted teeth: "That ape has been the death of me!"
著 is the weak zhe in 咬著牙 — teeth held clenched while he speaks.
He works it out instantly and correctly, which is worth noticing. Eight Rules is slow about most things, but the moment he sees the paper he knows exactly who put it there and why, and needs no further evidence.
猢猻 — ape, monkey — is the word he reaches for when he is genuinely angry rather than merely grumbling. Saying his brother has been the death of him overstates it, but only just: he is surrounded, holding stolen royal property, and the man responsible has gone home.
