The king thought privately, "I have been ill three years and have never tried this. Summon him in."

三年 is the only place in the chapter where the illness is given a length. Everything before this has said 久病 or 多時 and left it at that.

The attendant hurried out with the word: "His Majesty has granted him the taking of the pulse by threads. Summon the Elder Sun into the palace at once to make his examination."

長 is zhǎng for the third time since the king took to his couch. The title has become the man's name.

總評 Commentary

I have never tried this — is the sentence that decides the chapter. Not belief, not hope: simply that this is one thing he has not tried, and after three years he will try anything.

And the length of the illness arrives only now, in the king's own private thought, at the moment he gives way. He told a monk he was long sick and told his court he was weak; the actual figure he says to nobody.
